In 2020, Algonquins of Barriere Lake and Kitigan Zibi have demanded the halt to the sports/trophy hunting of moose in all their territories after noting a consistent decline in the moose population. They have enforced a moratorium on sports hunting by setting up checkpoints throughout the territory.

While the season is now over, it is likely the area will see an influx of illegal poachers, and next season checkpoints will need to be re-established.

Settlers being prepared to support in various ways is essential, as settler hunter shave been seen shooting out community signs, driving through checkpoints, and leaving moose parts around the camps.
